This work is a fascinating collection of European lore that exists between the quintessential witch and the devil. This relationship can be described in many ways: supernatural, mythological, spiritual, clandestine. The focal points of interaction between the physical witch and the spiritual devil were many. This lore primarily grew out of the 350 years of the witch trials, though the roots that formed this twisted and haunted tree are much older. Indeed, there were many parallels between the olden spirits of the ‘enchanted world’ of nature and the spiritual aspects of both the witch and the devil.

Important and insightful topics are addressed within that focus on the preternatural qualities of witches, demons, the devil, and their interactions. Drawn primarily from older folklore collections and demonological texts, this book is a strange and dark fairytale, one that ultimately shows a very strong belief in magic and spirits in European cultures of the past.
