Clary Sage, Salvia Sclarea Hydrosol!
Rosarium Blends is pleased to offer this amazing hydrosol. It is one of our favorites for both personal use and to grow in the garden. Harvested from our magical gardens on a beautiful waxing Moonday on July 27th, 2020 in the hour of Mercury. We began the distillation in the hour of the moon and carried it into the night under this waxing luna with a blessing from our understory owlings greeting our distillation at dusk in the final hours.
Clary, from the latin Sclarea, translates to ‘clear’ and describes how the plant has been used for centuries as an eye wash and Salvia, ‘to heal’.
Clary sage is still used today to brighten the eyes, improve vision, and slow down the ocular aging process. This practice is noted by Nicholas Culpeper in his Complete Herbal (1653), who referred to the plant as “clear-eye”. We have personally worked with this hydrosol for years to great effect in clearing eye infections and eye irritants caused by allergens.
It was also used traditionally as an inebriant and aphrodisiac as a substitute to hops to flavor beer. Wine makers infused clary with elder flowers and added the liquid to Rhine wine, then called it after another common name for clary, muscatel sage. As you can imagine it made the wine more potent and calming. Clary sage can be used as a spice to flavor food and is also very good in baths as an astringent to the skin.
The essential oil is revered by perfumers to use in perfume formulation for its aromatic qualities. We have worked with it extensively in this way and is an ingredient in one of our massage oils from our Erotic Apothecary line where we describe it as a spicy-sweet smelling essential oil and is “considered one of the most important erotic essences in aromatherapy (Ratsch)”. It possesses a stimulating and invigorating nature that promotes vitality and fertility. Its scent promotes deep relaxation, a clear mind and increases intuition. It is calming to the nervous system, particularly in cases of depression, stress, insomnia and deep seated tension.
Personally I have always felt and intuited this plant to be quite alien and fae, rending portals between realms for witches, seers, and magicians to move between worlds and communicate with these beings. This is one of the ways in which I work with it in ritual.
Use: . Keep all of the above in mind when deciding how you wish to work with this magical hydrosol. The only limitation is that of the practitioner and we encourage you to intuit the ways in which you wish to work with it magically. May spray on body or in room or use in a bath and also as eye wash if you desire
