Beware the Cloven One of Winter!
When the nights grow long and frost creeps across the eaves, Krampus stirs from his lair. Born of ancient pagan rites meant to drive away winter’s evil spirits, this horned terror now walks beside Saint Nicholas himself, rewarding the good, and punishing the wicked.
With matted fur, cloven hooves, curling goat horns, and a tongue that slithers like flame, Krampus carries his ruten bundle of birch rods and rattling chains. On Krampusnacht, the eve of Saint Nicholas Day (December 5th), he stalks the streets to mete out justice switching the naughty, binding the wicked, and, if you’ve truly gone astray, stuffing you into his sack for a one-way trip to his infernal den!
Light this candle to honor the wild balance of winter reward and retribution, merriment and mischief. Let its flame remind you that even in this season of giving, it’s best to mind your manners… for Krampus is watching.
Offering: Should you wish to appease the Cloven One, pour a small glass of schnapps, preferably strong and sweet and leave it by the flame on Krampusnacht. A toast to the dark spirit of winter may keep his lash at bay and win you his favor… or at least his mercy.
